Wisdom tooth extraction
Wisdom teeth are the 3rd set of molars that usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 25, though they may continue to grow until around age 30. These molars erupt just behind the 2nd set of molars, also called 12-year molars. Sometimes it is normal for the wisdom teeth to be congenitally missing or to even develop extra teeth in the area.
Sometimes wisdom teeth come through the gums straight and properly aligned. If this is the case, then these teeth don’t tend to cause much of a problem. However, sometimes wisdom teeth do not have enough room in the jaw to fully erupt. In these cases they usually become impacted or only erupt partially, and both wisdom teeth symptoms can cause severe dental problems later on. Conditions that may develop include gum infections, bone loss, decay or damage to other teeth. If symptoms begin developing into these conditions, then a treatment plan should be developed for wisdom teeth removal. This is where the teeth and their roots are extracted from the gums, leaving plenty of space for the rest of your teeth. Extraction can be an effective way to maintain the health of the teeth and gum tissue in areas where wisdom teeth have begun developing symptoms of dental disease. This is usually an outpatient procedure that only takes a few hours to complete. This is usually an easy procedure, but if the teeth are seriously impacted or damaged, the procedure may be more challenging. Most people recover from a wisdom teeth extraction procedure in a few days and experience few side effects.
